Football: Barca boss delighted with six-shooting kings

MADRID: Barcelona assistant manager Jordi Roura was delighted after his side's goals in their 6-1 win over Getafe were scored by six different players.

Alexis Sanchez and Lionel Messi took advantage of two wonderful passes from Andres Iniesta to put the Catalans 2-0 up within 13 minutes.

Barca then passed up a host of chances to add to their lead before half-time but found their range again after the break as David Villa and Cristian Tello made it 4-0.

And there was a deserved goal for Iniesta in stoppage time after Alvaro Vasquez had pulled one back for Getafe before Gerard Pique rounded off the scoring.

Barca's victory also extended their lead at the top of the table to 12 points when Atletico Madrid failed to win on the road for the fifth league game in a row as they lost 2-1 at Rayo Vallecano.

"It's strange but certainly positive to have six goals with six different scorers," he said.

"We are very happy with the performance of the team because so many players had just come from playing with their national team. As a group they played extraordinarily well."

With those internationals in mind Roura had given an outing to some of his fringe players and he was particularly happy with the form shown by Sanchez and Alex Song.

"Song had an incredible game and we have to highlight how solid he was. Sanchez is a much loved and respected member of the squad. Today he scored a good goal and that has given him confidence.

"In the past few games he was a little anxious but he has a great capacity to work hard. His fight and the pressure he applies is contagious and he is very important for us."

Roura also made a special mention of the contribution made by the Barca fans as more than 85,000 turned up for their first midday kick-off at the Camp Nou in nearly 50 years.

"I would like to thank the fans today because it is an unusual kick-off time. There was a great atmosphere, I saw a lot of kids and I think it has been a nice day for everyone."

Sanchez himself was particularly pleased to have found the net for the first time in the league this season after receiving a lot of criticism for his lack of production in recent weeks.

"This goal was special, but I have never stopped believing that I am a good player," he said.

"I know how I am and what I can do. Before I created chances but the ball wouldn't go in."

Getafe boss Luis Garcia explained how his side were powerless to stop Barca despite his intention to pressure them high up the field.

"You can't do much more because you don't have the ball. You can't take the ball off them and when you do it is after a great effort and you are still far from their goal," he said.

"We tried not to just sit back because last year we left here with a bad feeling having done that.

"It is very difficult. If you had seen my talks during the week you would understand that we wanted to be more ambitious but here you can't be."

Rayo Vallecano move into sixth with Real Sociedad just a point behind them in seventh as they beat Real Zaragoza 2-1.

But the result of the day elsewhere was arguably Espanyol's incredible 4-0 demolition of Athletic Bilbao at San Memes which moved them ahead of the Basques and into 13th.

6.5-magnitude quake strikes off Solomon Islands

HONIARA: A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit off the Solomon Islands on Sunday, the latest powerful aftershock following a 8.0-magnitude quake that sparked a tsunami four days ago, US seismologists said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 8:02 am, 2102 GMT Saturday, 29 kilometres south-southwest of Lata, the main town on remote Ndende Island in the Santa Cruz Islands, which are part of the Solomons, at a depth of 18 kilometres.

It was the latest in a series of powerful aftershocks to hit the remote region since a deadly 8.0-magnitude earthquake Wednesday triggered a tsunami, killing at least 13 people, destroying villages and leaving thousands homeless.

The tremor was not expected to generate a widespread tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

Geoscience Australia also measured it at 6.5 but centred at a greater depth of 36 kilometres.

A further 12 houses were reported destroyed following a 6.8 magnitude tremor Friday and another measuring 7.0, which sent villagers fleeing to higher ground in fear of another tsunami.

The Solomon Islands government has declared the outlying Santa Cruz Islands a disaster area as the aftershocks continue to hamper relief efforts.

Because of a fragile communications system, officials in the capital Honiara were struggling to get a clear picture of the extent of damage, but the Red Cross said food, water and shelter were a priority for quake-hit villages.

Tennis: Nadal advances to semi-finals in comeback event

VINA DEL MAR, Chile: Rafael Nadal, playing his first event after a seven-month injury layoff, advanced to the semi-finals of the $410,200 Vina del Mar ATP claycourt tournament with a straight-sets triumph on Friday.

The 11-time Grand Slam champion from Spain ousted seventh-seeded countryman Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-1, 6-4.

Top seed Nadal will face either French third seed Jeremy Chardy or Italian sixth seed Paolo Lorenzi for a spot in the final.

Until this week, Nadal had not played since a shock second-round exit from Wimbledon in June.

A torn tendon and inflammation in his left knee kept the former world number one out of the London Olympics and the 2012 US Open and a virus delayed his return.

Nadal broke Gimeno-Traver's first service game of the match for a 2-0 lead and again in the sixth game before holding to claim the first set after 33 minutes.

In the second set, Nadal broke in the ninth game and then fought off four break points, the only ones he faced in the match, before holding serve in the final game to advance after 84 minutes.

For the match, Nadal connected on 68 percent of his first serves, winning 29-of-44 points on his first serve and 14-of-20 on his second serve.

Nadal, who turns 27 in June, plans to compete in claycourt events at Brazil and Mexico before playing ATP Masters hardcourt events at Indian Wells and Miami and then heading to Europe for clay events in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome ahead of the French Open, where Nadal has claimed the crown a record seven times.

North Korea nuclear test could "tie hands" of South: Ban Ki-moon

UNITED NATIONS: UN leader Ban Ki-moon warned on Thursday that a nuclear test by North Korea could blow up hopes of an eventual reconciliation by "tying the hands" of the South's incoming president.

Ban, a former South Korean foreign minister, said incoming South Korean president Park Geun-Hye is "very much committed" to improving relations with North Korea.

"If they conduct this nuclear test, it may be the case that they are effectively tying the hands of the new president of Korea," Ban told a small group of reporters, including AFP.

"It may take a long time before any initiative between North and South can take place to normalise this relationship," he said, adding to international warnings to the isolated North.

Park will take over on February 25 from President Lee Myung-Bak, who warned on Thursday of "serious consequences" if Pyongyang stages the test.

The two sides have been divided since the end of the 1950-53 Korean war, and the 2010 sinking of a South Korean warship and a subsequent missile attack further escalated the rivalry.

A third test of an atomic weapon would be going in "the wrong direction" said Ban, highlighting UN resolutions that imposed tough sanctions after blasts in 2006 and 2009.

The UN Security Council has already threatened "significant" measures if North Korea stages a new breach of the resolutions. Ban said he has been discussing the North's moves "with key countries."

Ban said the Stalinist government should do more to help its people. "The humanitarian situation is dire in DPRK," Ban said, using the acronym of the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

He said nations had not given money to UN humanitarian efforts in North Korea "because of this crisis and the very tense situation on the Korean peninsula."

Ban said he had been forced to use money from the UN's emergency fund to support relief efforts in North Korea, where there is again widespread hunger.

Tennis: Nadal triumphs in singles return

VINA DEL MAR, Chile: Rafael Nadal made a triumphant singles return after a seven-month absence, beating Argentinian qualifier Federico Delbonis 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the ATP claycourt tournament.

The 11-time Grand Slam champion from Spain hadn't played since a shock second-round exit from Wimbledon in June.

A torn tendon and inflammation in his left knee had kept him out of the London Olympics and the 2012 US Open, while a virus further delayed his return to action this year.

The rust was showing as Nadal, now ranked fifth in the world, dropped his serve in the first game of the match and quickly fell into an 0-2 hole.

But he soon rebounded against his 128th-ranked opponent, regaining the break in the fourth game before prevailing in a hard-fought eighth game to give himself a chance to serve for the opening set.

Former world number one Nadal, playing with the familiar band of tape around the bottom of his left knee, looked keen to get things underway as he danced on the balls of his feet during the coin toss.

He seemed to move with ease around the sun-splashed red clay court, even when racing to the net after drop shots.

"Hundreds" of rebels killed, France to leave Mali from March

GAO, Mali: French-led forces have killed hundreds of Islamists in fighting to reclaim northern Mali and with the rebels' last bastion secured, France said Tuesday it will begin withdrawing its troops from March.

Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the 26-day military intervention had killed "several hundred" Islamist militants as its air and ground forces chased them from their northern strongholds into remote mountainous terrain in the far northeast, near the Algerian border.

The defence ministry said the Islamists died in French air strikes on vehicles transporting fighters and equipment, and in "direct combat in Konna and Gao", key central and northern towns.

France's sole fatality so far has been a helicopter pilot who was killed at the start of the military operation, while "two or three" soldiers have suffered light injuries, Le Drian said.

Mali said 11 of its troops were killed and 60 wounded after the battle at Konna last month but it has not since released a new death toll.

Le Drian said the Malian army had taken "some prisoners, not many, who will have to answer to Malian courts and to international justice," adding that some of those detained were high-ranking militants.

France expects to begin withdrawing its soldiers from Mali "starting in March, if all goes as planned", French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told daily newspaper Metro in an interview to be published Wednesday.

Nearly 4,000 French troops are currently deployed in Mali, and the former colonial ruler is keen to hand over the operation to African troops amid warnings the Islamists could now launch a prolonged insurgency.

The French defence ministry said Kidal -- the last town to fall of those seized by Al Qaeda-linked fighters who occupied northern Mali for 10 months -- was now under the control of French forces and some 1,800 Chadian troops.

The rebels have fled to the Adrar des Ifoghas massif around Kidal, a craggy mountain landscape honeycombed with caves, where they are believed to be holding seven French hostages.

An ethnic Tuareg group formerly allied with the Islamists, the Azawad National Liberation Movement (MNLA), meanwhile said it had retaken Menaka, a town previously claimed by French-led forces.

A Malian security source confirmed the Tuareg group was in the town 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the Niger border, which Nigerien troops had taken from Islamist occupiers but then left as they continued their advance.

Tuaregs working against "terrorists"

The MNLA -- which was originally fighting alongside the Islamists but then fell out with them -- earlier said it was working with France against "terrorists" in the region.

"In the framework of anti-terrorist coordination put in place with French forces", the MNLA will provide intelligence on "top terrorist officials" they have arrested, a spokesman said in Burkina Faso.

The group said it was responsible for the arrest on Sunday of two Islamist leaders, Mohamed Moussa Ag Mohamed, the number three in Ansar Dine (Defenders of the Faith), and Oumeini Ould Baba Akhmed of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO).

The MNLA launched a rebellion a year ago fighting for an independent state for the desert nomad Tuareg people, who have long felt marginalised by Mali's government.

But, after being chased from their strongholds by the Islamists, they have voiced a willingness to negotiate since France intervened.

With France eager to shed some of the military burden and 8,000 pledged African troops being deployed at a slow trickle, observers have said Paris is likely examining whether the MNLA is a possible partner.

Le Drian said France had "functional relations" with the group in Kidal but that fighting terrorists alongside them was "not our objective".

"As soon as the MNLA declares -- it seems it is doing so -- that it is not terrorist, or secessionist, and that it wants to be part of the internal dialogue in Mali, it will have a place at the table," he said.

In France, President Francois Hollande urged Europe to fight drug trafficking in west Africa, telling the European Parliament that "terrorism feeds on narcotics trafficking".

Analysts say the groups that seized northern Mali depend on drug trafficking, smuggling and kidnapping to arm themselves.

And in Brussels, global players including the United Nations and African Union met to carve out plans for Mali's future once the 26-day-old offensive draws to an end, urging elections -- which Mali's interim government has promised by July 31 -- and a national dialogue.

IMF, Afghanistan agree path to fresh aid

WASHINGTON: The IMF said Monday it had reached agreement with Afghanistan on the reform path needed to unlock the next aid instalment for the war-ravaged country.

The International Monetary Fund granted Afghanistan a US$133.6 million line of credit in November 2011 to help the country through the withdrawal of foreign military forces in 2014.

But to date the IMF has only disbursed two instalments of about US$18 million each.

Following a two-week mission in Afghanistan, an IMF team reached "understandings" with the Afghan authorities on a reform path to allow fresh aid to be disbursed, the IMF said in a statement.

The disbursement is contingent upon "the implementation of key structural benchmarks for submission of laws to parliament and strengthening banks' capital," the IMF said.

It said the Afghan authorities had agreed on the need to tighten monetary policy, in part to protect the country's international reserves position.

The authorities also saw the need to increase revenues by strengthening customs measures and prepare to implement a value-added tax (VAT) in 2014, the IMF said.

According to the global lender, the Afghan authorities reiterated their commitment to complete "quickly" the winding down of former private bank Kabul Bank, the centre of a scandal that had delayed the original IMF loan for a year.

The bank, once Afghanistan's largest, had to be taken over by the central bank in late 2010 amid accusations that powerful former executives siphoned off more than US$900 million, some of which was used to buy luxury properties in Dubai.

"The economic outlook for Afghanistan is broadly positive," the IMF said, adding that growth and inflation were better than expected in 2012.

The mission will prepare a report for the IMF executive board "following the implementation of the remaining key structural benchmarks," it said.

The board, which represents the Fund's 188 members, decides approval of aid disbursements.

LONDON: Steven Gerrard was on Sunday named as England's player of the year for 2012 after winning over 40 per cent of a fans' vote, the Football Association announced.

The 32-year-old Liverpool star edged out Danny Welbeck and Ashley Cole to clinch the award.

England captain Gerrard became his country's sixth cap centurion in November when he chalked up his 100th appearance in the meeting with Sweden.

"I still feel fresh, looking forward to the next game as much as my debut. Every time you put the England shirt on, it is a proud moment," said the Liverpool midfielder.

Football: Ronaldo's own goal condemns Real Madrid to defeat

MADRID: Real Madrid's dismal season went from bad to worse when Cristiano Ronaldo scored an own goal to hand relegation-threatened Granada a shock 1-0 win on Saturday.

Real coach Jose Mourinho announced he had already given up winning the league before Christmas and this latest blow means that Barcelona can increase their lead over them to 18 points if they win away to Valencia on Sunday.

There were doubts over whether or not Ronaldo would play as he is struggling with an ankle injury and his mood didn't improve when he headed a Granada corner into his own goal after 22 minutes.

Real had scored nine goals in their last two league games but they lacked the necessary drive perhaps as a result of a draining El Clasico in midweek where they scraped a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their King's Cup tie with Barcelona.

With Iker Casillas injured, Mourinho once again put his confidence in Diego Lopez in goal rather than youth product Antonio Adan while Raphael Varane also kept his place after an inspirational performance against Barca.

It was a baptism of fire for Granada coach Lucas Alcaraz who only had a few training sessions with the team after being appointed this week with the side only a place above the relegation zone.

He decided against making sweeping changes but did play new signing Nolito from Benfica on the left wing, with Dani Benitez injured, while Diego Buonanotte, who moved from Malaga, waited his chance on the bench.

Madrid started with plenty of the ball but they were sluggish in their passing and with Granada defending in numbers they were able to close them down without any alarms.

The home side set out their stall to allow Madrid to keep possession in the middle of the pitch while Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria struggled to make any inroads down the wings and they lacked the in-form Mesut Ozil through suspension.

Inigo Lopez headed over for Granada from a corner after 13 minutes and they looked dangerous on several breaks but they lacked a quality final ball.

Eventually Carlos Aranda sent over a telling cross with the Madrid defence stretched after 20 minutes and Alvaro Arbeloa arrived just before Nolito at the far post to knock it behind.

From the resulting corner Granada took the lead as Nolito's cross was flicked into his own net by Ronaldo jumping at the near post.

Madrid offered little in response with shots from distance from Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso.

After the break a 25-yard strike from Ronaldo forced a good save from Tono Rodriguez and they gradually raised the pace of their game in the final half hour.

Substitute Karim Benzema had a glaring miss from a few yards out in the final minutes.

Earlier bottom side Deportivo La Coruna's plight got worse as they lost 3-1 away to Getafe despite going ahead through a Luis Pizzi penalty after eleven minutes and having a man extra with the dismissal of keeper Miguel Moya.

Getafe responded with a penalty of their own through Diego Costa and scored further goals from Alvaro Vazquez and Adrian Colunga while Depor's Abel Aguilar was also sent off in the second half.

Osasuna moved out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo and Espanyol continued their improvement under coach Javier Aguirre with a 3-2 victory over Levante.

Football: Balotelli settles scores on Milan unveiling

MILAN: AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli hit out at the English media, weather and food, but had kind words for former club Manchester City as he was officially unveiled at the San Siro Friday.

Balotelli, who grew up as a fan of the Rossoneri, joined Milan for a fee of around 30 million euros in a deal that will see him remain at the Serie A giants until 2017.

Although admitting he would miss the "amazing" English Premier League, Balotelli said he was "really happy" to have returned to Milan, where he played for arch city rivals Inter prior to his City move in 2010.

The football aside, the 22-year-old admitted there are few things he will miss about England.

"The press first, the weather, the food," replied Balotelli when asked to expand on an earlier answer about the bad things he experienced during his two-and-a-half-year stay in the Premier League.

To one journalist from The Sun tabloid newspaper, Balotelli took a firmer stance.

"Ever since I arrived in England, your newspaper has always talked bad about me. So I don't want to talk to you," he added.

Seemingly admired and reviled in equal measure in the Premier League, where his off-field antics garnered as much if not more attention than his feats on the pitch, Balotelli said he would miss City, their manager Roberto Mancini and the club's fans.

"I don't have regrets, but I have to say thanks to all the City fans because they have all been nice to me, they always supported me in the good times and the bad," he added.

"I also have to thank my team-mates and the manager (Mancini) as well."

When asked what good things he would miss, Balotelli said: "Good things? Only when I get to play and train, my team-mates and the manager.

"To be honest, the Premier League is an amazing league and I think it's the best."

He added: "The bad things - everything else."

Presented to a 100-strong media by Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani, Balotelli - dressed in a smart suit - was first treated to a video of earlier goalscoring exploits with City.

The video stopped on a famous picture of Balotelli sitting in a Milan cafe while wearing an AC Milan shirt. It was in 2010, while he was still at Inter.

Balotelli was presented with the same number 45 shirt earlier this week, and again on Friday evening.

AC Milan have a reputation for being one of Europe's strictest clubs when it comes to managing their players, and controlling rumours surrounding them.

It remains to be seen if Balotelli, who endured a tumultuous time at City, will get his wish of a successful stay in Milan, where he hopes to remain "for as long as possible".

Asked by AFP of the significance of his move, and what he expects from the different style of football in Serie A, Balotelli replied: "Of course it's a dream come true. (For) a long time I wanted to come here and I couldn't.

"I'm not expecting anything. I'm just looking forward to playing with my teammates."

He added: "I'm here to win, to succeed, to play good football. To play for Milan is very important for me.

"It's an honour, and I want to remain here as long as possible."

Obama's Pentagon pick grilled by Republican critics

WASHINGTON: The Vietnam war veteran picked to lead the Pentagon, Chuck Hagel, faced a rough reception at his confirmation hearing Thursday as Republican critics reopened the bitter debate over the Iraq war and painted him as naive on national security.

In a dramatic exchange, a fellow veteran of Vietnam, Senator John McCain, blasted Hagel for his opposition to the troop surge in Iraq in 2007 and demanded Hagel declare if he had been wrong.

But Hagel, a Republican, calmly refused and tried to explain his thinking at the time, even as McCain repeatedly interrupted him.

"I want to know if you are right or wrong. That's a direct question. I expect a direct answer," McCain said.

Hagel replied: "I would defer to the judgment of history."

McCain responded with disgust: "History has already made a judgment on the surge sir, and you're on the wrong side of it."

McCain has seen the troop surge as allowing for a dignified exit from Iraq. Hagel, however, said it was unclear if it was worth losing some 1,200 Americans in the surge of reinforcements to Iraq.

"I'm not sure. I'm not that certain that it was required," he said.

The tense back-and-forth underscored the tensions between Hagel and his fellow Republicans over his apostasy on the Iraq war, which he initially supported before breaking ranks.

The blunt-speaking former senator from Nebraska, wounded and decorated for his combat tour in Vietnam, has said military action should be a last resort and has sometimes expressed impatience with Israel while expressing support for direct talks with Iran.

But Hagel sought to reassure lawmakers that he regretted some of his past remarks and was ready to back military action if necessary against Iran or other adversaries.

"We will not hesitate to use the full force of the United States military in defence of our security," Hagel said before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"But we must also be smart, and more importantly wise, in how we employ all of our nation's great power."

Hagel told lawmakers he endorsed the president's stance on Iran's nuclear program, with military force remaining an option if diplomacy fails.

"I am fully committed to the president's goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and -- as I've said in the past many times -- all options must be on the table to achieve that goal," he said.

Despite harsh criticism and a blitz of attack ads against Hagel, the White House is hopeful the Senate will approve his nomination in the end, albeit with little support from the Republican minority.

Another senator wounded on the Vietnam battlefield, John Kerry, has been approved as the next secretary of state, and both Hagel and Kerry reflect Obama's preference for restraint when it comes to employing US military might.

Most of the questions at the hearing focused on his record and not what he would do as defence secretary, amid looming budget cuts and a troop drawdown in Afghanistan.

Hagel has pursued a charm offensive in recent weeks, holding a flurry of meetings with senators in Congress. But the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee said he was not convinced, portraying Hagel as ready to appease Tehran.

"His record demonstrates what I view as a lack of steadfast opposition to policies that diminish US power and influence throughout the world," Senator Jim Inhofe said.

Inhofe and others also accused Hagel of being too soft on arms control, questioning his support for scaling back the country's nuclear arsenal.

But Hagel said: "We're not going to unilaterally disarm."

His nomination has sparked an unprecedented advertising campaign by conservative activists, who began airing ads not long after Obama announced his choice for the Pentagon.

Although the ad campaign likely will fail to block the nomination, the attacks serve as a warning to Hagel that he will be under tough scrutiny.

If confirmed, Hagel would be the first Vietnam veteran to serve as Pentagon chief, as well as the first to come from the military's enlisted ranks.

YouTube confirms eyeing subscription 'channels'

SAN FRANCISCO: YouTube confirmed on Wednesday that its evolution as an Internet stage for video may include subscriptions to content that creators believe people will pay to see.

"We have long maintained that different content requires different types of payment models," a YouTube spokesman told AFP.

"There are a lot of our content creators that think they would benefit from subscriptions, so we're looking at that."

Talk of the Google-owned video sharing service one day charging for content surfaced in December of 2011 when YouTube unveiled a major redesign that showcases television-style channels.

The new layout set the stage for film or television studios to create pay channels at YouTube.

"We are trying hard to marry the best of TV and the best of online," YouTube vice president of product development Shishir Mehrotra said when the re-design was introduced.

While YouTube is the most popular application on Google TV, the service is intent on being available on the full array of platforms and hardware including videogame consoles, tablets, smartphones, and Internet-linked televisions.

YouTube in the year 2010 began letting viewers pay to "rent" streaming movies or television shows.

US Dollar falls on euro as Fed meets

NEW YORK: The US dollar fell against the euro Tuesday as the Federal Reserve opened a two-day meeting keenly watched for signs that the US central bank could move up plans for tightening monetary policy.

The euro hits its best level against the greenback since December 2011, at 2200 GMT, trading at US$1.3493 compared to US$1.3454 late Monday.

No major new decisions were expected from the Fed Wednesday in the wake of December's momentous meeting, in which it expanded its bond-buying program and set explicit unemployment and inflation targets for raising interest rates.

But with four new members rotating onto the Federal Open Market Committee and the notes from the last meeting showing increasing concerns over inflation, analysts will be looking for any nuance on its view of economic strength.

"There is heavy debate amongst traders as to when the Fed's quantitative easing program will slow or come to an end alongside evidence that the US economy is improving gradually," said Renee Mu at DailyFX.

"The Fed, though, with new voters is less likely to stop its asset buying within the first half of 2013."

Yet the US dollar's steady fall since early November has not been matched by the bond market, where prices have dropped sharply in the past week and yields surged as bond investors anticipate an early tightening of monetary policy.

"Expectations for the Fed have shifted significantly in the past couple of weeks, which in turn has moved the bond market," said Chris Low at FTN Financial.

"The market now expects the Fed will raise rates in Q4, 2014."

The yen was mixed Tuesday. The dollar fell marginally to 90.72 yen from 90.82 yen, while the euro bought 122.42 yen, up from 122.20.

The pound ended its losing streak, picking up to US$1.5758 from US$1.5692. The dollar fell to 0.9212 Swiss francs from 0.9259 francs.

US military plans drone base near Mali: official

WASHINGTON: The US military plans to set up a base for drones in northwest Africa to bolster surveillance of Al-Qaeda's affiliate in the region and allied Islamist extremists, a US official told AFP on Monday.

The base for the robotic, unmanned aircraft would likely be located in Niger, on the eastern border of Mali, where French forces are currently waging a campaign against Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The base was first reported by the New York Times earlier Monday.

The airfield would allow for better intelligence gathering by unarmed drones on the movement of AQIM and other militants, which Washington considers a growing threat, the official said.

If the plan gets the green light, up to 300 US military service members and contractors could be sent to the base to operate the drone aircraft, according to the New York Times.

US Africa Command was also looking at an alternative location for the base in Burkina Faso, the official said.

But State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland reiterated that there are no plans to commit US troops to any fighting on the ground.

"The US military is not going to be engaged in combat operations in Mali," she stressed, "and we don't expect US forces to become directly involved on the ground in combat either."

The United States and Niger signed a status of forces agreement Monday, which will provide legal safeguards for any American forces in the country. The Pentagon secures such agreements for base arrangements or troop deployments.

The French intervention in Mali, the recent hostage taking at an Algerian natural gas plant and the deadly assault on a US consulate in Libya in September has increased the demand in Washington for more intelligence on militants in the region.

As news emerged of the planned drone base, the Wall Street Journal reported that US military and intelligence officials were weighing plans to provide French fighter aircraft with sophisticated data to help them hunt down militants in Mali.

President Barack Obama's administration waited for more than two weeks before agreeing to offer aerial refuelling tankers to the French forces, amid concerns among some advisers that assisting the French could draw the United States into an open-ended conflict.

The Obama administration has also provided transport planes to help ferry French weapons and troops and to share intelligence with Paris from surveillance aircraft, including reportedly unmanned Global Hawk spy planes.

But Nuland stressed a political situation was also needed for Mali.

"There has to be more than a purely security solution to the problems in Mali," she said, adding "the security track and the political track have to go hand in hand."

"A key component of returning stability to Mali includes new elections and overturning the results of the coup firmly."

Presidential 'tug-of-war' ahead for Czech government

PRAGUE: Heading a wobbly centre-right minority government, Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas has congratulated leftist Milos Zeman on his presidential victory, but analysts warn of a looming "tug-of-war".

Zeman, who campaigned on an anti-austerity platform, on Saturday trounced aristocrat Karel Schwarzenberg - foreign minister in the austerity-driven Necas government - in the Czech Republic's first-ever direct presidential election.

Necas, in office since 2010 and responsible for painful budget cuts amid a recession, greeted the news of the left-wing Zeman's win with cool optimism.

"I'm convinced our cooperation will be absolutely normal," Necas told reporters in Prague on Saturday - but observers say he may soon change his tune.

"Milos Zeman is a strong player, and he will try to show that being elected by the people means he's earned some authority on the political scene," Tomas Lebeda, an analyst from Charles University in Prague, told AFP.

"I think the government is in for a tug-of-war," he said.

Known for his sharp wit and for not mincing his words, the 69-year-old Zeman, himself a former premier from 1998-2002, has skewered Necas for steps including tax hikes on food and medicines as joblessness soared to nearly 10 percent last year.

"A leftist president must oppose a right-wing government," Zeman said on Saturday, while also quipping about record-low popular support for Necas.

Zeman's rise comes as Necas has seen backing for his cabinet in the 200-seat parliament shrink from 118 to just 98 votes. He has been surviving thanks to former allies now sitting as independent lawmakers.

He has so far survived five no-confidence motions by the Zeman-allied left-wing opposition and three confidence motions he called himself.

Should Necas's vulnerable government fail to ride out its term, analysts say Zeman would also pose a challenge for the left-wing Social Democrats, which polls show would likely win a snap election or the next regularly scheduled poll in 2014.

The new president, whose term will expire in 2018, is still a power to be reckoned with in the party, which he chaired in 1993-2001.

"The president may start playing the role of a leader of the left-wing executive and try to persuade everyone that he's the one formulating left-wing policy for the government," said Lebeda.

Led currently by lacklustre lawyer Bohuslav Sobotka, the Social Democrats might find Zeman calling the shots.

"Imagine Sobotka going to see Zeman with a cabinet line-up after he has won elections. Zeman might say: 'How come you left out this one, and where's this lady? Get out!'," Michal Pink, a political analyst at Masaryk University in the second Czech city of Brno, told AFP recently.

Heavily reliant on car exports to western Europe, notably to Germany, the Czech economy sank into recession a year ago after posting 1.9-percent growth in 2011.

Zeman struck a chord with austerity-weary voters by vowing to be a hands-on president and attending sittings of both the government and parliament.

An economist, he focused in his campaign largely on "voters from lower-income groups, older and less educated," political analyst Josef Mlejnek observed.

"He's promised to tell the government what a miserable life people in the Czech Republic are living, and I believe Mr. Milos Zeman that he will keep his promise," voter Miroslav Drobny told AFP at Zeman's Prague victory rally.

"If you veto a law after you didn't say a word against it in cabinet or parliament, you're a hypocrite," Zeman said on the campaign trail.

Zeman replaces eurosceptic Vaclav Klaus, whose second and final term expires on March 7.

Germany has 'everlasting responsibility' for Nazi crimes: Merkel

 

BERLIN: Germany has "an everlasting responsibility" for the crimes committed by the Nazis, Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday, just days ahead of the 80th anniversary of Adolf Hitler's takeover of power.

"Naturally, we have an everlasting responsibility for the crimes of national-socialism, for the victims of World War II, and above all, for the Holocaust," Merkel said in a podcast on her website.

Her remarks came as the world prepares to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27, the date in 1945 when the Soviet army liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp in then occupied Poland.

In another significant date, Wednesday will mark eight decades since Hitler was appointed chancellor on January 30, 1933 by then president Paul von Hindenburg.

"We must clearly say, generation after generation, and say it again: with courage, civil courage, each individual can help ensure that racism and anti-Semitism have no chance," Merkel added.

"We're facing our history, we're not hiding anything, we're not repressing anything. We must confront this to make sure we are a good and trustworthy partner in the future, as we already are today, thankfully," she said.

Football: Millwall condemn Villa to more Cup misery

LONDON: Millwall piled on the misery for beleaguered Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert as John Marquis's late goal gave the Championship club a 2-1 win in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday.

Lambert has endured a torrid time since leaving Norwich to take charge at Villa Park in the close-season, but this week has been a new low for the Scot, whose Premier League team were knocked out of the League Cup semi-finals by fourth tier minnows Bradford on Tuesday.

Villa desperately needed a victory at the Den to get back on track after that humiliation and looked on course when Darren Bent opened the scoring midway through the first half.

But Nigerian defender Danny Shittu headed Millwall level soon after Bent's goal and young striker Marquis punished Villa's defensive frailties with the last minute winner.

Lambert insisted earlier this week that Villa owner Randy Lerner has assured him he won't be sacked, but this latest embarrassment will only increase the pressure on the former Borussia Dortmund star.

While Millwall, FA Cup runners-up in 2004, can celebrate a place in the last 16, their victory was slightly marred when a section of home fans began throwing missiles on to the pitch early in the second half.

After a nervous start, Lambert's side seemed to shake off their timid approach and went ahead in the 22nd minute.

Fabian Delph robbed Liam Feeney of possession and Andreas Weimann capitalised, surging away from Shittu before forcing Millwall goalkeeper David Forde into action for the first time.

Forde could only palm Weimann's effort into the path of England striker Bent, whose miskicked effort crept over the line.

But with Villa's star striker Christian Benteke rested there was a lack of bite about the visitors and Millwall quickly regained a foothold in the game.

Villa have been weak at set-pieces for much of the season and Millwall looked to exploit that through Shittu, who headed onto the roof of the net from James Henry's corner.

Lambert's men failed to heed the warning and the hosts equalised in the 27th minute when Lions captain Shittu met another Henry corner at the far post and powered a header past Shay Given.

Feeney came close to putting Millwall ahead when he fired just wide following a corner before the hosts' momentum was brought to a halt by their own supporters.

The game was stopped for five minutes just before the hour-mark due to a disturbance amongst Millwall fans in one corner of the Dockers Stand, with several bottles thrown in the direction of the assistant referee Mark Scholes after he awarded a free-kick to Villa.

Villa substitute Barry Bannan fired in a shot that Forde pushed away as the visitors launched a rare second-half attack.

But, with a replay at Villa Park within reach, Villa were shattered in the 89th minute when Marquis, making his first start of the season, headed Adam Smith's cross on to the bar before reacting quickest to nod home the rebound.

Cameron warns companies must 'pay fair share' of taxes

DAVOS: British Prime Minister David Cameron warned Thursday that corporations must "pay their fair share" of taxes and said he would use Britain's G8 chairmanship to counter tax avoidance.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Cameron said too many global businesses were abusing tax schemes, after Britain last year announced a crackdown on multinationals such as Starbucks, Google and Amazon, claiming they are avoiding huge tax bills.

"When some businesses aren't seen to pay their taxes, that is corrosive to public trust," Cameron said in a speech to the global political and business elite.

"We want to use the G8 to drive a more serious debate on tax evasion and avoidance. This is an issue whose time has come," he said.

He said Britain would use its chairmanship this year of the Group of Eight rich nations to push for cross-border action on tax avoidance.

"Clamp down in one country and the travelling caravan of lawyers, accountants and financial gurus just moves on elsewhere. So we need to act together at the G8," Cameron said.

He insisted such moves were not anti-business.

"I believe in low taxes... I'm a low-tax Conservative. But I'm not a companies-should-pay-no-tax Conservative," Cameron said. "Individuals and businesses must pay their fair share."

Britain last month announced a campaign against "tax dodgers" and "cowboy advisers" to claw back £2 billion a year, after lawmakers alleged that multinationals were involved in "immoral" avoidance of tax.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed that tax evasion and fraud was also an "enormously important issue" for the Group of 20 major economies.

"Every financial instrument, every financial product, every financial market, needs to be placed under regulation," said the chancellor.

"We are very far from that and I can only call on the financial industry to support us on this because another bubble that we create would bring another crisis for the global economy, which would be very difficult to overcome," she added.

Taxand, the world's largest independent global organisation of specialist tax advisors to multinational businesses, hit back saying that harmonisation of rules was not necessarily the best solution to tax fraud.

Multinationals should enter into talks with the relevant tax authorities "to obtain prior agreements for a particular initiative or investment," said Frederic Donnedieu de Vabres, the group's chairman.

"It is this, as opposed to a pursuit of harmonisation, that perhaps poses the best way forward," he added.

'Avatar' director Cameron accused over screenplay

LOS ANGELES: A US judge ordered director James Cameron to hand over drafts of the screenplay for "Avatar" Wednesday, to lawyers for a man claiming he wrote the script on which the 3D blockbuster was based.

Eric Ryder is seeking compensation from Cameron and his production company Lightstorm Entertainment, claiming that the 2009 Oscar-nominated film is based on a story he wrote called "K.R.Z. 2068."

He filed a lawsuit in December 2011, saying he spent two years developing the story. On Wednesday Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Alan Rosenfield ordered Cameron's lawyers to turn over screenplay drafts.

"We have to be careful and sensitive about ideas and information," said the judge.

But he denied a request by Ryder's lawyers to grant access to the personal calendars of Cameron and Jon Landau, the chief operating officer of Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment Inc.

Ryder's lawyer K. Andrew Kent said his legal team will also get access to backup tapes from computers used by Cameron.

"Avatar," about a paraplegic US marine with split loyalties after being sent to a distant world wanted for its mining potential, was seen as a breakthrough in the use of 3D technology, and has grossed more than US$2.7 billion worldwide.

Rushdie in India for new film screening

NEW DELHI: British author Salman Rushdie said he was "sick and tired" of being called controversial as he flew in to India for the screening of a new film based on his iconic novel "Midnight's Children".

The Mumbai-born novelist, whose 1988 book "The Satanic Verses" remains banned in India for allegedly insulting Islam, said it was groups which enforce bans on books and artistes that should be branded as controversial instead.

"I don't know why the media calls me a controversial author. It is the extremist groups who enforce bans on books and artistes who should be called controversial," Rushdie told the NDTV news channel.

"I hope better sense prevails," added the Booker prize-winning writer, who was flanked by the film's director Deepa Mehta on the TV show.

The movie, set in post-independence India, would be shown on January 31 to a select audience including the director and author's friends in Mumbai, local media reports said.

"A day after the special screening, the author will host an intimate dinner for select members of the film's cast and crew," The Times of India newspaper reported.

Rushdie, whose visit was shrouded in secrecy for security reasons, spent a decade in hiding after Iranian spiritual leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa in 1989 calling for his death.

Last year, Rushdie was forced to withdraw from a literary festival in the northwestern city of Jaipur in January after death threats and angry protests from Islamists.

But he visited the country two months later and launched a stout defence of freedom of expression.
